Mike's Diary

Still Alive

Been a little while without updating. Not a whole lot to report, really. I was responsible for nighttime upgrades last week, so it was 2-3am nights every day. While I only show up in the office for a couple of hours and the head home (to prepare for the upgrades that need to happen that evening), the switch to nighttime hours can be a bit draining. I've slept longer the past couple of days than I have in a LONG time.

The upgrades from Thursday failed miserably and I'm going to be giving them a go again on Tuesday. Blech. Hopefully it goes smoothly this time. I think I've fixed all the pieces that prevented it from proceeding last time.

Corinne and I went to Craft Boston yesterday. It wasn't as nice as the spring show, but still not bad. Given that we're taking jewelry classes right now, it was good to see lots of different stuff for inspiration. It's also neat to look at stuff and know how it was assembled - the process is greatly demystified now.

The Mac is going quite well. I can't say that I really have any major complaints with it now. I replaced Terminal with iTerm and that's been a HUGE improvement for me. Given that I spend so much time at the command line, this was necessary. If you don't use it, you won't need it. I do, so I did.

I'm currently reformatting my former laptop. I had Ubuntu on it, which worked really well for me, but I don't need another laptop. With it being larger than the MacBook Pro (it's 17" widescreen - pretty much a "desktop replacement"), I don't really have any incentive to truck it around. I'm going to get it all gussied up and swap out Corinne's currently ancient PC for this. I would have put her on a linux (probably Ubuntu), but she's a big iTunes user, which means Windows or OSX. Since I don't have any other Mac-supported hardware and I don't hate anyone enough to force them to use Vista, XP is the only remaining choice.

Today's been very low speed, which is nice. Had some waffles earlier and I haven't done much else than playing with this other laptop. We need to go grocery shopping at some point, but someone's napping and there's no rush to wake her up.

Besides, these security updates take forever to install.

I'll tell you...

Last night was Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me (the NPR news quiz).

We had awesome seats. The BEST seats. Front row, middle section. Badass.

The show will be airing this Saturday, so I'm not going to say much about it beyond Peter, Carl, Amy, Charlie and Mo were all awesome.

Hopefully they'll be back in Boston sometime soon again - would love to attend another show.

Dia de los Muertos

The comic con was a bit of a bust. Oh well. Ended up doing some other stuff downtown and I picked up Spore, which is installing right now.

Forgot to mention it earlier, but happy Dia de los Muertos.

It's very possible that the rest of the evening will be filled with video games and little else... which I don't think I'd complain about.

Death never looked so good

I'm finally doing some image processing on the mac. The only real thing that I've taken pictures of (beside the shots at the museum yesterday) has been foliage type shots around the apartment. I don't care enough to go traveling somewhere to take the "perfect fall photograph", but when I see some good light and some nice colors, I can be bothered to grab the camera and walk outside a few steps.

Circular polarizes really help in making the colors pop in these sorts of shots.
